Re: What in the hell was that?

Good post Bow Talks. Hey is your name a play on the word Botox? Oh you're good.

To further elaborate, I do believe the Horse Apples episode was not just a 1 dimensional showcase for saying "southern people are fucking idiots," but rather, explored the nature, motivation and consequences behind this kind of humor, which, as the focus group showed, people eat up like chocolate sunshine.

To correct one's own ignorance about important issues (politics, racism and one's very psyche) first requires that you become aware of it. Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and etc.. point out the follies of a particularly ignorant sector of our society (that's not to say we aren't all idiots, the south is used more allegorically for anyone harboring the particular attitudes explored in this, and pretty much all of the episodes.) They make their audience aware of their own stupidity, laziness and etc... However, the reaction is not "Oh, I see... this is a seriously problem" instead it is "LOL YA THAT'S TRUE." And so, willfull ignorance marches on.

Shur I'm a racist alchoholic wife abusing lunatic that has probably molested my niece when I got so drunk that I stabbed a mexican baby and then blacked out. A giggle! And a' Texas. But aw shucks, that's all under the surface, aint no matter ta mind about it anyhow.

Imagine, before WW2 occured, a nazi comedy troupe traveling around Germany. Let's call them the Aryan Collar Comedy Tour. The following might be a good opening joke: "If your blind and compulsive following of your own nationalistic identity leads you into morbid generalizations and hatred of those generalizations as your leaders manipulate you with fear into committing inhuman and incredibly evil and destructive actions, well then, you just might be a Nazi!" And then they all laugh and the comedians go on to sell a record number of CDs, DVDs, HD-DVDs, bumper stickers, pins, trucker caps, friendship bracelets and decorative cakes, all celebrating the most horrendous aspects of themselves under the guise of good natured humor.

But of course, their jokes are much simpler than that, and like the psychology of so many people in the world today, there are very dark and dangerous attitudes underlying the silliness on the surface.

Horse Apples satirized this in many different ways throughout the episode. Brill. Yant.

    Sincerely,

             - Bow "I'm Smart" Talks

Umm wow conceited much? But I do agree with you. It was a very farcical view on southerners. But I think you're taking this a bit too far. I don't think the writers really thought about the psychology of it that much. They are simply writers for a television show. Not social revivalists.

After a couple more viewings the shock has worn off and i'm enjoying this episode more and more. I'd probably put it in the top three or four so far this season actually.

"The Horse Apples episode has separated the wheat from the chaff. We are the superior fans"

I couldn't agree with you more Bow, I was beginning to get the feeling that people just enjoyed Wondershowzen for the over-the-top grossness of it. If you want that (over-the-top grossness) watch the unredeemingly crass and poorly written  "Drawn Together" and wank off. Wondershowzen is the only show on TV I know that has everything! I really enjoyed Horse Apples, and a big reason why this episode (and a lot of the humor) on this show is funny, is because of the fact that it's annoying people. I can laugh at the platonic and subconsious jokes but also laugh at the fact that somewhere, some idiot is watching Wondershowzen and being disgusted/angry/confused. That's the type of stuff that makes me laugh while I sleep. I have so much respect for this show because they obviously don't give a shit if people like it or if they get cancelled, they do what they feel which makes it more genuine than anything else on television right now. I'm out!

I agree, they really have an Andy Kaufman let's-fuck-with-the-viewers kind of thing going on.

Re: What in the hell was that?

Hey, whatsup.  I'm new to this site and a big fan of WonderShowzen since season one.  I personally liked the Horse Apples thing.  Only WonderShowzen has the balls to totally change their show like that.  There was so much subtle, underlying shit going on with that Horse Apples show that it pushed the viewer to think even more than the typical shows do.  In this day in age with all the terrorism and wars caused by religous extremists (as they always have been), it's good to see a slap in the face to that blind faith way of thinking.  I loved the pregnant girls rant about them "godless scientific folk" and evolution.  I about fell out of my chair.  Scary thing is there's more Americans that don't believe evolution than those who do.  ...Sad state of our education system.  All that said, I did miss seeing the usual characters too.  Great episode though.

Wow. And here I thought that people loved the show because it was so deliciously subversive. Turns out that some of you just dig filthy-mouthed puppets. Too bad for you.

I only got about 50%-60% of the jokes.  I will have to go back and analyze each joke to understand it...but doing that causes the show to lose all its value.  One shouldn't have to do that...
For the record, the Horse Apples episode was fucking brilliant, and if you idiots can't grasp what they were doing, then shut up and keep it to yourselves, because if you all were such amazing arbiters of comic genius, you'd have your own TV show, now wouldn't you?

    1. CLAP! CLAP! Total in agreement, what a fucking wail! If you don't get Horse Apples, christ-sakes, then you might as well be on HORSE APPLES itself!  Its the whole genre they're playing with, Open Your MIND! There's nothing to get! , its all just turning everything inside out. Chrissakes, I didn't get it, and that's what had me on the floor coughing every living micro-cosmic carbon-monoxide kernel out my living chest with laughter, crying and asking for redemption.

    Dear Sir,

What an intelligent post. It is ironic to receive such a level or insight on a forum for WS.

I am delicately reminded by such your honorable observations that I can't figure you out or Horse Apples or Showzen. When I watched Horse Apples, I was immediately made aware of the racism implied in Hee Haw. It was with such clarity that I assumed the humour was going. Remember the scene in Natural Born Killers where they showed a flashback of the girls' family done in the saracastic vien of Happy Days? You have to see that to understand Horse Apples. Its a meta-comment on the creators of television crap; and, for all what is considered "entertainment" these days.

    Sincerely,

    Frank Futer, Esq.

Re: What in the hell was that?

Well I had problems understanding Horse Apples as well. Not because I didn't get the jokes, but beacause I couldn't understand their accent half of the time. And am I the only one who thinks we're all psycho-analyzing this a bit too much? I mean it is just a television show.

Re: What in the hell was that?

Bottom line is Horse Apples might have been funny, but we too angry about the abberation in the Showzen formula to notice.  The show might have been funnier, to the point of public acceptance, had they done Horse Apples versions of breaking news, beat kids, Clarence, and Q&A.  But because they did something completely different, we weren't willing to accept it, thus it was a bad move on the creators' part.  Hopefully, they'll learn from their mistakes.
I told you numbers are shmarta!
