    207: Mathema--I mean--Horse Apples!

It's already being talked about in a few other threads, but might as well get a main 207 thread up and running.  Pretty tough episode to get through, huh?

the episode went pretty fast in my opinion.

i was just waiting and waiting for the regular Wonder Showzen to return...never happened of course.

It wasnt necessarily tough to get through since it went pretyt fast while waiting for something that never occured :P.

Wow, just.....wow. At the very least you have to applaud the fact that PFFR aren't just giving lip service to the idea that their entire motivation is pretty much annoying people. Mission accomplished guys. Good work.

Is it just me or has there been WAY too much David Cross in season 2. It seems like he's been in every episode so far. He's not even that funny to begin with, and now he's fouling up one of my favorite shows.
He's gotta have some compromising pictures we don't know about.....

    Re: 207: Mathema--I mean--Horse Apples!

You're all insane, Horse Apples was the shiznit, I've already watched it a few times.

The jokes are rapid fire and bitingly satirical. The priest in prison making jokes w/ God as the straight man, the "classic" Horse Apples which was a parody of the old "Who's on first?" routine, except using Shi'ites and Kurds, the perpetually pregnant chick smoking and drinking, the dude in the workshop reading the Bible and chuckling to himself and saying "yeah, right!" ... it was AWESOME.

So we didn't get the usual dose. Whatever! They summed it up perfectly at the end - its all about that kind of people not thinking things through. Those types NEED to be lambasted. There's still another episode this season anyway, so don't fret.

We should all start sending them oodles of money to make a Wonder Showzen movie.

David Cross has been in 3 episodes, one of the episodes he was in for 10 seconds...  You don't think he's funny?  Well, then I wonder how you think Wonder Showzen is funny, as I imagine the writers think quite highly of him. (ever watch Mr. Show?)

I thought the Horse Apples episode was good.  I like when shows aren't committed to sticking to one idea.

I enjoyed the satire in this episode as well... up to a point. Making it into a whole episode was a bit much. Props to PFFR for going for something unique and original like 'Patience' was... but this one kind of fell flat. It just kept going and going and going and it never seemed to end.

Yes, I think the "going and going" comment is valid, and probably part of why some of us weren't so crazy about the episode.  It lacked the manic jumping from one thing to another that we're accustomed to.  Chauncey, cartoon, Clarence, cartoon, Chauncey, Beat Kids, "We went to the..." segment... shifting from one thing to another.  I think the relative uniformity of this "Horse Apples" episode failed to feed our ADD.  The same messages could have been presented by a more normal, more dynamic episode, and they were.  It was called "Knowledge."  But I'm not really bashing the episode, I can't until I watch it a second time, free of expectations.

Horse Apples is excellent. Wonder Showzen exposes and makes fun of the evils of our society as seen through the eyes of the show's writers and it continues to make fun of the viewer for even understanding it. It's like double cynicism. It's dark and critical and the writing is very good.

David Cross is definitely a good person to have in the mix as well as Zach Galifianakis.

    Re: 207: Mathema--I mean--Horse Apples!

    I loved it.

I just discovered Wonder Showzen a couple of weeks ago. I saw (albeit while very tired) the "Bootleg" episode, and now I've seen this one. So, the fact is, I don't think I've ever watched a "normal" episode of Wonder Showzen (if, indeed, there's ever been a really "normal" ep).

I can say that I was laughing so hard at "Horse Apples", I was practically screaming. David Cross's scream of laughter lasting through three bits; "I vote against my own interests!"; the bearded guy wiping away his tears and muttering "I'm stronger th'n this!"... I could hardly breathe, I was laughing so much.

Keep in mind, I grew up catching reruns of "Hee-Haw!" at 6:30 Sunday morning on some local channel -- and this was in Queens, NY! -- and they parodied the details of "Hee-Haw!" so perfectly, it just made the show that much more of a scream. If you haven't watched "Hee-Haw!", you probably missed a lot of the jokes incorporated into the camerawork, sets, etc. It was perfect; I half expected Roy Clark to come out and join in!

David Cross was given absolutely free rein to express his disgust with the flotsam of Southern culture and he absolutely took full advantage. Bravo, Mr. Cross. I only hope I can one day thank him in person for a painfully funny 1/2-hr. I've watched it 4-5 times already and the highlights still make me bust out.

Your disfunction and inability to concentrate is no excuse. In fact, it makes you seem pathetic since you rely on such a specious crutch.

Did anyone else notice that in some of Cross' bits he was dressed up in the same costume that Larry the Cable Guy wears? Or that during the "Cooperation" episode, when he was addressing the kids while being held hostage, that he referred to his captor as "Larry" and gave the order to execute by saying "Git 'er Done!"?

Anything that allows Cross to continue his war on Larry the Cable Guy is okey-dokey in my book!
